Food & Wine Pairing: Heating Up & Chilling Down – Why This Simple Pairing Is A No-Brainer.

Why this short combo is a no-brainer.

Let’s face it, everyone in the wine world knows that fried chicken with a bottle of bubbly is one of the most famous wine and food matches.

Let’s start with buffalo-style chicken wings, which are my personal favourite. Buffalo wings were formed in 1964, although the narrative of how they were created (between the inventor’s son and spouse) and who invented them is still disputed. Teressa Bellissimo of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, is widely believed to be the originator.

Then there are the fried wings.

My favourite part of crispy fried chicken is the wings, but I’ll never say no to any other delectable element. I’ll never say no to a fantastic bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine. When I can appreciate them both at the same time… I honestly have no words.

It’s so overused.

This is something I’ve heard a lot regarding fried chicken and wine. But, to be honest, my initial reaction is that it’s predictable because it’s so addictive. In this scenario, overuse breeds more overuse. There are numerous ways to creatively mix sparkling wine with delectable chicken recipes. However, they do not excite the senses like a good bottle of bubbly and crispy fried chicken.

The Yin and Yang of things.

Why This Easy Combination Is a No-Brainer

Let’s get to the facts when it comes to a crispy bird with Champagne or sparkling wine. It’s a fantastic partnership! The stuff that makes a good relationship work… when opposites attract in the greatest manner possible. The contrast between the fatty, fried skin and the wine’s bracing acidic cleaning ingredients shows opposition, but they work well together. The wine’s bready, brioche notes wonderfully complement the chicken’s crunchy breading covering. Both collaborate to make something wonderful.

Returning to Buffalo.

Although crispy chicken and bubbly are the most popular, buffalo-style wings can also be paired with bubbles. Spicy wings go well with dry sparklers. We return to the oil and acid for this combination explantation. The buttery, spicy, acidic sauce brings out the wine’s palate-cleansing abilities and provides a welcome break from the hot, tongue-tingling flavours.

Here are some of my favourite, low-cost wines to pair with fried or buffalo-style chicken.

The prices of these wines range from $21 to $60 per bottle. Most of your local merchants carry Segura Viudas Cava Brut Champagne. All of the others should be checked online with the producers.
